Baseball Picks Up Road Win at Tallahassee CC, 4-1
January 28, 2021
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Brooks Walton pitched a gem from the mound and the Santa Fe bats provided the run support, as the Saints went on the road and beat Tallahassee Community College, 4-1.
The game was scoreless after the opening inning, until the Saints started the scoring on a Xavier Moronta RBI double to score Tyler Shelnut, who had reached on a walk.
Santa Fe's 1-0 lead doubled in the top of the fourth frame, as Shelnut touched home after a two-out RBI single from Luis Rodriguez.
While Walton was dealing on the hill, Jevin Relaford helped Santa Fe establish a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Relaford smacked a double, stole third, then came around to score after a Tallahassee error.
Before giving way to the bullpen, Walton held Tallahassee scoreless through six innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while tossing seven strikeouts.
Mitchell Gross replaced Walton for the seventh, and although the Eagles reduced their deficit to 3-1, Gross induced induced a flyout to limit the damage.
Santa Fe's final run came in the eighth, with Jonathan Logsdon getting a leadoff single and eventually touching home with the help of some Eagles' errors.
Shelnut would throw the final two innings and shut the door to earn the save, allowing two hits while striking out four, including the game's final batter in the 4-1 victory.
Offensively to lead the Saints, Logsdon went 2-of-4 with a run scored, while Shelnut was 1-of-2 with two runs scored. Moronta, Rodriguez, and Santiago Garavito each had an RBI.
Wiggs' Words
"Brooks (Walton) set the tone for us with an outstanding outing," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "He was able to throw all his pitches for strikes and threw his fastball to both sides of the plate to keep them off balance. Shelnut was really good for us the last two innings as well. We had chances to score more runs than we did, but I thought we had a lot of good at-bats. We just need to build on this and keep improving."
