GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 16 Santa Fe Baseball split a doubleheader with visiting South Florida State College Saturday afternoon at the SF Baseball Field.
Game 1 – SFSC 3, SF 2 (9 Inn.)
Offense was hard to come by in the day's opener, and the Panthers prevailed in extra-innings.
Each team scored two runs in the second inning but were held scoreless through the planned seven-inning game.
In extras, South Florida State College broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth, plating what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.
Key Statistics
Wyatt Campbell, Bret Madren, and Zeb Marquis each had two hits, with Marquis producing a double and stolen base. Zeth Rodriguez had the Saints' lone RBI.
Starter Lance Bolton had a solid outing, throwing six innings while allowing just six hits and two earned runs. He struck out a career-high nine batters.
Campbell tossed two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, while Jake Blair was charged with the loss after entering for the ninth.
Game 2 – SF 6, SFSC 2
By the end of the third inning, SF led 6-1 and went on to win comfortably.
After the Panthers went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, the Saints produced four runs in their opening at-bats. Luke Marquis had a two-out, two RBI single, then Jake McKee drove in two with a double.
In the third, McKee smacked another double for an RBI, and SF's final run came off a double from JP Herrholz.
Key Statistics
The bats did enough in this one, as Trent Becker went all seven innings from the mound for a career-best outing. Becker conceded just seven hits and two runs, with one unearned. He struck out a career-high eight and walked just one.
McKee (two doubles, three RBI) and L. Marquis (2 RBI) did most of the damage in the batter's box.
