January 30, 2021
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Santa Fe softball wrapped up their appearance in the JUCO Kickoff Classic against St. Petersburg, and the Saints bats weren't able to get going in a 5-1 defeat.
The Titans scored four runs in the third inning and tacked on another in the fifth to lead 5-0.
The Saints' broke into the scoring in their final at-bats with the season's first homerun off the bat of Ashlyn Rogers, a solo shot, but Santa Fe would leave two baserunners stranded in the comeback effort in the final frame.
Taylor Barrett was the starting pitcher and threw all six innings for the Saints. Just one run allowed was earned, and she recorded five strikeouts.
Offensively, Santa Fe scattered eight hits, with Grace Prom and Rogers each finding the barrel of the bat for two hits apiece. The three extra-base hits were doubles from Prom and Madison Dixon, along with the longball from Rogers.
Fico's Focus
"We struggled all day to find a winning rhythm in the box and failed to make adjustments," said Head Coach Lindsay Fico. "We made too many mistakes in the field to keep ourselves in the games today."
"Cris'Deona Beasley was a bright spot in the circle today. She did a good job of working ahead and keeping hitters off balance. We will learn from our mistakes and prepare for a better showing against ABAC Tuesday."
Up Next
Santa Fe's next time out is the home opener, slated for Tuesday, Feb. 2 against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The opening game of the doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m.
