May 8, 2021
LONGWOOD, Fla. - After winning a thrilling 11-10 game in the FCSAA State Tournament opener over No. 15 Pensacola State College on Friday, Santa Fe softball fell to No. 12 Indian River State on Saturday evening by a 5-1 score.
The Saints' bats were unable to capitalize on a few opportunities, and the Pioneers took advantage of theirs under the lights at Boombah Soldiers Creek Park.
TOP OF 2ND - IRSC 4, SF 0
Starter Taylor Barrett struck out three Pioneers in the first inning, but Indian River was able to load the bases in the second frame, and with two outs, Indian River came up with a Grand Slam to go ahead 4-0.
TOP OF 5TH - IRSC 5, SF 0
Barrett continued to rack up the strikeouts from the circle, and both sides went scoreless in the third and fourth.
Indian River was able to extend their lead to 5-0 in the fifth, once again coming up with a two-out hit, this time an RBI double.
BOTTOM 6TH - IRSC 5, SF 1
Santa Fe missed out on an opportunity for runs in the bottom half of the fifth, stranding three.
The Saints did, however, bring across their first run of the game in the sixth . Ashlyn Rogers' sacrifice fly plated Story Giebeig, who singled to lead off the inning.
Giebeig's run proved to be the final run of the contest, however, as the Saints fell into the bottom half of the bracket.
