Saints Shut Down Hawks
Gainesville, FL- The Santa Fe softball team was at home on Thursday, hosting the Hillsborough Community College Hawks. The Saints came into the game with a 21-10 record and nationally ranked at #20. They are coming off a sweep of the #16 nationally ranked Seminole State College. Today, they would continue their win streak as they went on to sweep the Hawks 9-1 and 11-0.
How It Happened
Game 1
After forcing Hillsborough to a three and out, Santa Fe would strike first by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter Sydney Fowler starting things off for the Saints by hitting a double to center field. This was followed up by a single to left field by Kamaya Cohen, which moved Fowler to third base. Ariana Wright grounded out at first base but scored Fowler and advanced Cohen to third base. Juliann Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Cohen.
Alexis Daphney hit a line drive three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Sydney Fowler hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
After singling on a ground ball to center field, Kamaya Cohen stole second and third base. Cohen scored as a result of an Ariana Wright double to left field.
The Hawks would score their only run of the game in the fifth inning after Vanessa Neptune homered on a line drive to center field. Jayla Clark and Kamaya Cohen would score the final two runs, putting the final score at 9-1. Saints win!
Game 2
Both Ryleigh Bauer and Sydney Fowler saw time in the circle in Game 2 for the Saints. Both pitchers combined forces by not allowing a single run to shut out the Hawks.
The Saints put up one run in the first inning after Ariana Wright hit a line drive single to left fielder Avery Dorsey to score Sydney Fowler.
In the second inning, the Saints were unstoppable, scoring a total of 10 runs on eight hits. The leading batter for the Saints was Ariana Wright, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Fowler, Cloey O'Doniel, Jayla Clark, Alexis Daphney, Kamaya Cohen, and Juliann Smith all recorded hits.
This game would only go five innings as the Saints would run rule the Hawks 11-0.
