Baseball Wins Again at Home, 10-9 over Pasco-Hernando
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - There were plenty of different ebbs and flows in Friday's baseball matchup with visiting Pasco-Hernando State College, and when the final out was recorded, Santa Fe earned the victory by a 10-9 margin.
Offense ruled during the rainy day in Gainesville, and the Saints' outproduced the Bobcats to pick up their fourth win of the season, and third in the season's three home games so far.
Santa Fe jumped in front in the bottom of the second inning with four runs, giving starting pitcher Brooks Walton an early lead. Santiago Garavito drove in two with an RBI single, Jake McKee scored Dylan Mock with a shot into the gap in right-center field, then Armando Albert's RBI single brought around Garavito.
The Bobcats made it a 4-3 game in the top half of the third, after a three-run home run over the left field fence.
In the bottom of the third, Santa Fe extended the lead to 5-3. Nick Hernon led off with a double and advanced to third on an error from the Bobcats, eventually coming in to score after a Luis Rodriguez single.
In their next at-bats, Pasco-Hernando once again did damage with the long ball off Walton, tying it up at 5-5 with a two-run homer.
After a scoreless fifth inning for each side, the Bobcats took their first lead of the game in the top half of the sixth with two runs, taking a 7-5 lead and forcing the Saints into the bullpen in the process.Santa Fe threatened offensively in the sixth but stranded two baserunners.
After reliever Carson Pillsbury set the Bobcats down in order in the top of the seventh, the Saints bats came through in the clutch.
After a Coy Phyllips walk, Mock connected with a pitch for the Saints' first home run of the 2021 season, a two-run blast to right field to tie the game at 7-7.
As the rain became more steady, the Saints didn't stop there. A Jevin Relaford single back up the middle put SF in front 8-7, bringing across Garavito. Rodriguez later came to the plate with two runners on and two-outs, lacing a double over the outstretched glove of the leaping third baseman to bring the score to 10-7.
With defense and pitching the Saints' biggest priority from that point forward, Santa Fe kept Pasco-Hernando off the scoreboard in the eighth. Phillips at first base had an unassisted double play to put an end to the Bobcat's at-bats, making a nice snag on a line-drive before stomping on first base himself.
Pasco-Hernando scored two runs and brought the game-tying run all the way to third base in ihe ninth inning, but Tyler Shelnut sealed the deal with a strikeout to earn the final out and save.
The Saints are now averaging 11 runs per game over their last three outings, two of which have been wins.
Pasco-Hernando had 16 hits to Santa Fe's 14 in the high-scoring affair.
Every player in the SF batting order had a hit, led by a 3-of-5 day from Rodriguez with one run scored and three RBI. Albert, Relaford, and Garavito each had multi-hit games as well, while Mock's one hit, the home run, was timely.
Pillsbury earned the win on the mound, tossing 2.2 innings while allowing just one hit and two walks, adding a strikeout. Shelnut was credited with the save, earning a swing-and-miss K to secure the final out.
