Johnson and the Saints Sweep South Florida, 8-1 and 14-8
Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe freshman Trent Johnson tossed a gem in game one of a double header against South Florida State College, leading the Saints (10-1) to an 8-1 win over the Panthers in Avon Park. In game two the SF bats came alive to the tune of 14 runs in a 14-8 win. The two wins give Santa Fe double digit wins just 11 games into the season.

Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe freshman Trent Johnson tossed a gem in game one of a double header against South Florida State College, leading the Saints (10-1) to an 8-1 win over the Panthers in Avon Park. In game two the SF bats came alive to the tune of 14 runs in a 14-8 win. The two wins give Santa Fe double digit wins just 11 games into the season.
Johnson (1-0) worked a complete game in the first half of the double header, throwing seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just one run and three hits.
The big inning for the Saints was in the second when they put six runs on the board to pull away. Tyler Kinney was 2-for-5 with two RBI, Nick Horvath 2-for-5 with one RBI, Jared Shouppe 2-for-4, Matt Allen 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Hugo Valdes 2-for-4 with a RBI.
In game two the Saints trailed 3-0 before breaking out for five runs in the top of the third, two more in the fourth, one in the sixth, and six in the seventh to put the game away.
Nick Horvath knocked in five runs with only one hit. Two came via an RBI single, one on a sacrifice bunt, one on a sac fly, and the other a bases loaded walk. Chandler Rodriguez was 2-for-2 and Phil Munroe finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Michael Ray (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, pitching two innings of relief.
The Saints are back in action on Monday, February 16 against Abraham Baldwin at 3:00 PM. SF Student Life will host a tailgate starting at 2:30 PM with free pizza, Kona Ice, and more.
