SHOUPPE HOMERS, SAINTS ROLL PAST DAYTONA STATE 7-3
Gainesville, FL – Jared Shouppe hit his first homerun of the season on Saturday afternoon against Daytona State College, propelling the Saints to their sixth straight MFC victory 7-3. SF is now 19-5 overall and 6-1 in Mid-Florida Conference play.
Tom Watson (4-1) started on the hill and gave his typical stingy performance, allowing eight hits and three earned runs over 6.2 innings of work. Walker Burgess picked up his first save by working 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, striking out one.
Daytona broke the ice early on, plating a run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Saints put four on the board in the third, three of the runs coming with two outs on Matt Allen and Hugo Valdes RBI hits.
SF scored a fifth run in the fourth on a Cole Parks RBI single, scoring Cliff Bryant who tripled to start the frame. Daytona cut the lead to 5-3 with two in the fifth, but Santa Fe answered in the bottom of the fifth when Jared Shouppe (1) blasted a deep homerun to right center.
In the eighth Robbie Hanlon doubled and later scored on a pick-off attempt gone wrong.
Burgess held court from there, nailing down the Santa Fe win.
Shouppe finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a homerun, Hugo Valdes was 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Robbie Hanlon was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
The Saints will continue their three game series with Daytona on the road Monday at 3:00 PM. They will wrap the set up on Wednesday in Gainesville. That game can be seen live at 3:00 PM on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints
