Palatka, FL – Tom Watson (5-1) was on top of his game Wednesday afternoon, tossing five innings of shutout ball to pace the NJCAA #9/FCSAA #3 Santa Fe Saints past Florida State College-Jacksonville 11-1. The win moves SF to 23-7 overall and helps keep them in second place in the Mid-Florida Conference with a 10-3 mark.
The Blue Wave starting pitcher struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning, walking seven Santa Fe batters, and hitting another. The Saints scored five runs in the opening frame on just one hit for a 5-0 lead. In the second inning the bats came alive and SF added five more runs on three hits, including an RBI double by Cliff Bryant and a RBI triple by Cole Parks, putting the Saints ahead 10-0.
FSC-J finally got on the board in the top of the seventh with a bases loaded walk, extending the game another half inning to avoid the mercy rule. That's as far as it would go however, as Alex Aristy ended the game with an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the seventh.
Watson struck out eight over his five innings of work, walked one, and allowed two hits. Clint Duke pitched the final two innings, surrendering one earned run.
Cole Parks was the only Saint with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.
Santa Fe and FSC-J will continue their three game series on Friday in Jacksonville at 3:00 PM and finish up in Gainesville on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Fans can watch Saturday's game on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints
