Gainesville, FL – A day after clinching a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament, the Santa Fe Saints came out flat on the road against Daytona State, falling to the Falcons 13-5. The win improves DSC's chances of representing the Mid-Florida Conference in a tournament play-in game April 27.
The Saints (28-9, 15-5 MFC) started fast on Sunday, scoring three runs in the top of the first on RBI by Cole Parks and Tyler Kinney, but Daytona answered right back, plating two in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-2.
SF added a run in the third, and that one was also answered by the Falcons to cut the lead back to one at 4-3.
From there it was all Daytona as they outscored the Saints 10-1 the rest of the way, paced by a big four run sixth inning.
Austin Goss started on the hill for SF and struggled with his command, walking five over three innings of work. The Saints bullpen didn't fair too much better, allowing eight earned runs on an abnormally off day.
Mike Castilla and Cole Parks each had two hits for Santa Fe, and Tyler Kinney knocked in two runs.
The Saints will have a chance to brush this one off quickly when they take to the diamond in Gainesville on Monday, April 20 at 3:00 PM against the #2 team in the nation, St. John's River State College (42-8, 17-4 MFC). Juts a game and a half separates the Saints and Vikings atop the MFC standings. A win for SF would tie the teams up in the loss column with just two games to play.
