After dropping two games to NJCAA top 10 teams on day one of the Courtney Miller Invitational Tournament the Santa Fe Saints pulled off a couple of wins on day two defeating Miami-Dade State College 6-3 and NJCAA # 19 Pensacola State College 5-2.
Pitching was the name of the game on Sunday with Cris Beasley and Donnie Gobourne turning in complete game gems. Beasley (5-2) went the distance in the opener registering seven strikeouts and no walks. Gobourne (5-5) struck out nine batters in game two and walked two.
"Cris controlled the first game from the first pitch," said SF head coach Lindsay Fico. "She did a phenomenal job with first-pitch strikes. It allowed us to work the plate with wider corners and resulted in more strikeouts."
In game one the Saints would score all the runs they would need in the third inning when they broke a 1-1 tie with three runs.
Karina Ortiz-Munoz started things off with a double and scored when Grace Prom reached on an error. Gobourne followed with a single and Jessica Parsells reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Prom scored when Laila Dickey grounded out and Gobourne scored on a ground out by Ashlyn Rogers.
In game two the Saints scored twice in the second and twice more in the fourth to give Gobourne all the support she would need.
Jaye Carter reached on an error by the centerfielder in the second that allowed Rogers and Beasley to score and Gobourne singled in Alyssa Hamilton and Ortiz-Munoz in the fourth. Meanwhile, Gobourne was setting down the Pirate hitters.
"Donnie threw to very tough lineup," said Fico. "She maintained control throughout the game and seemed to get stronger as the game went on."
Gobourne had four hits and three runs batted in on the day while Ortiz-Munoz, Carter and Rogers had two hits apiece.
"Gobourne, Carter and Ortiz-Munoz had strong days at the plate," said Fico. "Their at-bats got better throughout the day. Jaye (Carter) is one of the hardest working players I have coached, and we are happy the hard work is paying off."
SF (12-8) will travel to Marianna on Tuesday to take on Chipola College in a doubleheader.
