Softball Picks Up Two Wins on the Road Against St. Johns River
PALATKA, Fla. – Santa Fe softball notched another Mid-Florida Conference sweep against St. Johns River State College, bringing their current winning streak to five.
GAME 1 – SF 9, SJRS 1
The Vikings got on the board first, bringing one run across in their half of the second inning.
The Saints answered immediately in the third. Riley Schnyder hit a double and was brought in by Grace Prom. Story Giebeig stayed hot at the plate as she blasted a two run home run, her second in as many games. That made the score 3-1.
The Saints would tack on another run in the fifth. Isabella Santiago reached on a walk, then stole second base. Santiago would advance to third base on a ground out by Jaye Carter. Prom would bring Santiago in on a single, making it 4-1.
The sixth inning would be big for the Saints as they brought four more across the plate. Neely Peterson would start it out with a solo homer. Shaela Bybee would reach after being hit by a pitch. Ashlyn Rogers then got a base hit single and Schnyder would pick up an RBI after hitting a double. Carter would bring both Bybee and Rogers in with a single. After six, the score was 8-1.
The Saints got the game's final run in the seventh inning, bringing the tally to 9-1. It came when Giebeig was brought in by Rogers.
Key Statistics
The Saints hit two home runs in the contest, from Giebeig and Peterson. Schnyder was big for the Saints, as she went 2-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
Gabrielle Mathre got the win, going six innings while only giving up one run.
GAME 2 – SF 1, SJRS 0
Game two would turn out to be a defensive battle, only taking one run to win it. In the end it was the Saints picking up their second win of the day, as Taylor Barrett dominated in the circle. Barrett ended her day with a season-high 15 strikeouts, as she kept betters guessing the entire contest for her second-straight complete game shutout.
The Saints put runners on in each of the first four innings but failed to capitalize.
Cris'deona Beasley got the Saints going in the sixth with a two out single. Then, it was Ashlyn Rogers with a huge triple that would score the lone and winning run of the game, which saw 15 Saints batters left on base.
Key Statistics
Barrett's pitching would be the story of the game as she struck out 15 Viking hitters. Rogers's triple brought across the only run of the game.
