The Saints Win On The Road In Daytona
Daytona, FL- The Saints hit the road to face another conference opponent, the Daytona State Falcons. This is the third meeting between these to teams this season. The Saints would go on to win 72-61. Shakiria Chaney led the Saints offensively with 23 points and Leyah Houston contributed 14 points. Bella Weary was the leading scorer for the game. She had 25 points.
How It Happened
The first period started out with both teams struggling to find their rhythm offensively. By the end of the first quarter, the score was an even 12-12.
The second quarter started with the Saints going on a 6-0 run putting the Saints up 18-12. The Falcons hit two triples to cut into the lead. Leyah Houston sparked the Saint's offense with her strong inside play including a much-needed basket on an in-bounds pass.
Bella Weary scored a tough basket as she was fouled on the shot after driving into the lane. She completed the three-point play from the foul line cutting the Saints lead to two points (27-25). With a strong offensive push, the Falcons were able to take a rare lead (28-27).
Just before the first half ended, Ta Niya Walker scored on a transition layup to help the Saints recapture the lead.
In the second half the Saints tightened up their defense and were able to get key stops and steals which often led to transition baskets. The Saints were also able to make a number of tough shots in the lane to extend their lead. Shakiria Chaney hit a tough shot in the lane over a Falcon defender to put the score at 42-40. Camryn Robinson scored an and one basket assisted by Joey Delancey, putting the score at 44-40. Shakiria Chaney hit a triple to increase the Saints cushion to twelve points near the halfway mark later in the fourth quarter. With solid defense and poise of the offense end, the Saints would prove to be the better team today, holding on to win the game 72-61.
