Volleyball Splits Saturday’s Play, Picking up Sweep over Pensacola

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe Volleyball concluded their play in the 2022 Santa Fe Classic on Saturday.

The four-team round robin tournament was presented by Campus USA Credit Union and Redpoint Gainesville Apartments. The Saints defeated Pensacola State College 3-0 in the morning, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23.

In the tournament finale, SF dropped a 3-1 result to receiving votes Monroe College (8-2) to suffer their first defeat of the 2022 season.

The Saints defeated the Pirates with little trouble, despite a slow start to the third set, and remained unbeaten against Pensacola in the all-time series.

The final match of the day pitted the two remaining unbeaten teams in the Santa Fe Classic, and the Monroe Mustangs got the better of the matchup to improve to 8-2.

The four-set match was the first of its kind in the Classic, after every match previous to it had been decided by a sweep.

Santa Fe won the opening set by a 25-21 margin, with a big block at the net from Paige Dinges giving the Saints the upper hand.

After SF established an early lead in the second set, the momentum swung dramatically and the Mustangs were able to ride it for three consecutive sets.

UP NEXT

Despite the defeat in the final match of the weekend, the Saints have started their campaign with a 3-1 mark under first-year Head Coach Bailey Coleman headed into Suncoast Conference play.

SF hosts No. 6 Miami Dade College on Saturday, Sept. 3 for a 1:00 p.m. match.
