Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe College President Dr. Jackson Sasser got things started on Friday with a strike on the ceremonial first pitch of the season, and the Saints took it from there, outhitting the Hawks for a 12-5 victory.
SF (1-0) took control of the game early, plating four runs in the first inning, two by way of a RBI double from sophomore catcher Matt Allen.
Hillsborough (0-1) answered with a run in the first, but it could have been more as SF starting pitcher Trent Johnson worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam.
In the third the Saints plated two more runs on a wild pitch and a Brandon Hernandez single. Santa Fe made it 7-1 with a run in the fourth, but the Hawks bounced back in a big way, scoring four in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-5.
That's as close as it would get as the Saints held HCC scoreless the rest of the way, and tacked on five insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning. Robbie Hanlon put an exclamation point on the win with a two run homer in the eighth inning.
Trent Johnson started on the mound and pitched 4.1 innings, striking out five with no walks. Chris Hopkins picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief, and Troy Bacon shut the door with two scoreless innings. Combined, the Saints staff struck out 10 and walked none.
Offensively, Wyatt Meisterhans finished 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI, Robbie Hanlon was 2-for-2 with a homerun and two RBI, Matt Allen was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Tyler Kinney was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Santa Fe will get right back after it tomorrow when they travel to South Georgia State College for a double header scheduled to start at 12 noon. RHP David Lee is expected to start the first game, and RHP Kyle Morton the second. Fans can follow live stats here.
