Gainesville, FL – A five run ninth inning wasn't enough for the Santa Fe Saints on Monday afternoon in Palatka as SF came up a run short in a 7-6 loss to St. John's River State College. The loss ends a 12 game winning streak for NJCAA #1 Santa Fe.
Max McKinley started on the hill for the Saints and surrendered two runs in the first and two in the second for an early 4-0 Vikings lead.
Brock Edge got Santa Fe (35-7, 16-3 MFC) on the board with a solo homerun in the sixth. Needing six runs in the ninth to tie it up, SF came alive, scoring their first run on a passed ball before Garrett Mathes hit a three run homer to make it a two run game.
Cade Westbrook made it a one run game when he knocked in Andrew Eyster to make the score 7-6. SJR forced a fly out from Haydn Cano two batters later to end the game.
Tyler Moore and Austin Bass combined to throw 1.2 innings of scoreless ball to keep the game within striking distance.
Santa Fe will get right back after it on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. in Gainesville against Daytona State College.
