Baseball's Bats Erupt in a 14-2 Victory over St. Petersburg
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe baseball won a second game in as many days, displaying a potent batting lineup that visiting St. Petersburg College was unable to contain in a 14-2 win.
The victory exacted some Saints' revenge from the previous matchup between the two teams, which the Titans won by an 8-1 score.
In the first inning, starting pitcher Robb Adams picked off two baserunners at first base before getting a K. In the bottom half of the frame, Armando Albert led off with a single and came around to score on a hit-and-run with a Jonathan Logsdon double.
Adams struck out the whole Titans' side in the second, and the Saints' bats proceeded to open the floodgates with six runs in their following at-bats to hand Santa Fe a 7-0 lead.
All six runs were scored with two outs already recorded, and the surge was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Albert and a two-RBI single from Nick Herndon.
Adams continued to post zeros, and although the Saints went scoreless in the third, they proceeded to extend the lead all the way to 13-0 with one run in the fourth and five in the fifth, with most of the damage being done by the top of the order.
St. Petersburg brought in an unearned run to in the seventh to get on the scoreboard, and Adams was relieved to an ovation from the home fans, exiting with a final line of 6.1 innings pitched, one hit, two walks, one unearned run, and seven strikeouts.
The Saints tacked on one run in the seventh, followed by the Titans with one run in the eighth.
That would prove to be the final tally of the game, as Santa Fe got the final out in the dominant 14-2 win.
The win was the first of the season in two starts for Adams, the freshman left-hander. Dillon Walters, Michael Rodriguez, and Trent Becker each made quality appearances out of the bullpen, respectively.
Five of the Saints' 16 hits in the game were for extra bases. Albert had a big day offensively to lead the Saints from the leadoff spot, going 4-of-5 with a double, three runs scored, and three RBI. Logsdon and Herndon added three hits and two RBI apiece, while Jake McKee chipped in with a two-RBI single.
Wiggs' Words
"For the second day in a row, we got outstanding starting pitching, this time by Robb Adams," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "He was in command from the start and that really gives a team a lift. Albert and Logsdon really set the tone for us offensively in the first two spots in the order, combining for seven hits. It was great to see us follow up a good game with an even better one. I look forward to seeing this team continue to improve as we go forward."
