Long Ball Powers Baseball Past St. Johns River, 14-3
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Coming off a 20-run outing at Florida State College at Jacksonville, the Santa Fe College Baseball bats continued to produce in a 14-3 victory in Mid-Central Conference play over St. Johns River State College.
The two teams split in their first two meetings of the season, in games that were decided by just one run.
The Saints didn't allow a competitive matchup in this one, however, as Santa Fe belted five home runs and scored in every inning in the run-ruled, six inning game.
After the win, Santa Fe has now produced runs in 11-consecutive innings, totaled 34 runs in the last two games, and prevailed in nine of their last ten outings.
Key Statistics
Five Saints had multi-hit games, led by a 3-of-4 outing from Luis Rodriguez. All three hits from the third baseman were of the extra-base variety, including a double and two home runs to total three RBI. It was Rodriguez's second multi-home run game in a week's time, as he moved to a team-high five homers on the season.
Tyler Shelnut also crushed two homers, his fourth and fifth of the season, to drive in three. His second long ball was a two-run shot, walking it off in the sixth.
Dylan Mock had a solo homer, and Santiago Garavito also had a big day at the plate with two hits and three RBI.
Lance Bolton was the winning pitcher for the Saints, picking up his first collegiate with with five innings pitched, six hits allowed, three runs (one earned), and five strikeouts. Eduardo Yepes set down the Vikings in order in the top of the sixth frame.
Flynn's Final Thoughts
"Guys are really seeing it well at the plate and sticking to their plan, putting together some good, quality at-bats and having lots of success," said Assistant Coach Conrad Flynn.
"You love scoring a lot of runs like that too, because it takes a lot of pressure off our pitchers to just go out there, relax, and do their job throwing strikes and getting outs."
