No. 8 Baseball Downed by NWF in FCSAA Tournament, 11-3
LAKELAND, Fla. – No. 8 Santa Fe Baseball took to the field and began postseason play at the FCSAA State Tournament at Joker Marchant Stadium, and fell by an 11-3 score to Northwest Florida State College.
Both of the starting pitchers struck out two in the opening inning, and the game remained scoreless through the first two frames after the Saints stranded a baserunner at third base in the bottom of the second.
TOP 3RD - NWF 1, SF 0
Northwest Florida State College opened the game's scoring. After a leadoff single and two stolen bases, the Raiders had an RBI single through the left side to go in front 1-0. Starting pitcher Robb Adams limited the damage, earning a swinging strikeout.
TOP 4TH - NWF 3, SF 0
The Raiders extended their lead to 3-0 on another RBI single followed by a Saints' error for an unearned run.
BOTTOM 4TH - SF 3, NWF 3
The Saints' first two batters, Luis Rodriguez (single) and Coy Phillips (walk), reached safely. Tyler Shelnut's flyout advanced Rodriguez to third, and Xavier Moronta drove in the first run for SF with a single to left field.
Gabriel Esquivel copied him in the next at-bat, lacing an RBI single down the left field line, and Nick Herndon's single shot to left-center field brought Moronta home to tie the ball game at 3-3.
TOP 5TH - NWF 4, SF 3
The Raiders regained the lead, 4-3, when Carlos Guzman connected on a two-out long ball over the left field wall.
TOP 7TH - NWF 7, SF 3
NWF went ahead 6-3 with a one-out, two-run home run that cleared the right field wall, ending Adams' day and bringing in Eduardo Yepes out of the bullpen.
The Raiders tacked on one more run to lead 7-3, after a two-out single proceeded by an RBI double into the right-center field gap.
TOP 8TH - NWF 11, SF 3
The Raiders broke the game open and went on for the run-rule victory with four more runs in the eighth, capped off by a two-RBI double to right field.
Key Statistics
NWF had 13 hits in the game, while Santa Fe finished with five.
All five of the Saints hits came from different batters (Armando Albert, Rodriguez, Moronta, Esquivel, and Herndon. All five hits were singles, and Moronta, Esquivel, and Herndon accounted for an RBI apiece in the fourth inning.
Phillips had two walks and a run scored.
For just the second time this season, Adams was charged with the loss on the mound. He went 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned), while striking out seven.
Yepes, Trent Becker, and Michael Rodriguez each made appearances out of the bullpen to record the final five outs.
Wigg's Words
"Obviously it wasn't our day today," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "We didn't have enough good swings at it offensively and we didn't execute some pitches when we needed to. We will hopefully be better tomorrow when we play Indian River State College."
