Hillsborough Gets Past No. 16 Baseball, 2-1
TAMPA, Fla. – No. 16 Santa Fe Baseball and Hillsborough Community College took to George M. Steinbrenner Community Field on Thursday afternoon, and the Hawks were able to get past the Saints in a pitcher's duel, 2-1.
Santa Fe's offense mustered just one run on five hits in the game and weren't able to provide starter Trent Becker with the run support he needed to pick up a victory.
The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fourth, and the SF run came in the top of the fifth. Bret Madren tripled, then scored on an RBI single from Zeth Rodriguez.
The Saints advanced what would have been the game-tying run to third base in the eighth inning, but Tyler Shelnut was left stranded.
Key Statistics
Becker fell to 3-1 on the mound this season. He continued to excel as a bright spot for the Saints pitching staff, however. His final line in seven innings pitched included six hits allowed, two runs (one earned), two walks, and seven K's.
Lance Bolton posted a zero in the eighth, allowing one hit while striking out two Hawks.
Five different Saints had hits for SF, with Madren having the only extra-base knock with the triple before scoring on Rodriguez's RBI.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Saints.
