
Baseball Shuts Out St. Johns River, 10-0 in Six Innings
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe Baseball entered the day's play with St. Johns River in a little bit of a rut, but hit their way right out of it to cruise to a run-ruled, six-inning 10-0 victory over the Vikings to even the Mid-Florida Conference series.
Mitchell Gross had his full arsenal on display from the pitcher's mound, and combined with the Saints' bats, the game was complete in the blink of an eye.
Tyler Shelnut crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the first opening to put the Saints in front.
The score would remain 1-0 through the first three frames, and Gross had already compiled five strikeouts.
SF's offense came to life in the fourth. Bret Madren got into the action with a solo home run. After a walk from Zeb Marquis, Jake McKee brought him in with a triple.
Jacob Guthrie's single brought McKee home to bring the score to 4-0. Guthrie stole second base, then proceeded to advance to third on a passed ball. Jevin Relaford was who came through in the clutch, lacing a two-out RBI double down the left field line to make it 5-0.
Gross ended the top of the fifth inning with another K, and SF tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to go in front 7-0. Madren had an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Z. Marquis.
The game's final three runs came in the sixth to put an end to the Vikings' misery, as Shelnut walked the game off with his second home run of the game and eighth of the season, a three-run drive to straight center field.
Key Statistics
The complete game shutout from Gross helped him earn his first win of the season to improve his record to 1-1 on the mound. The lefty had every pitch working, and was in complete command.
His final line included just three Viking hits and eight strikeouts.
The Saints' ten runs came on ten hits and ten RBI. Relaford, Shelnut, Madren, McKee, and Guthrie each had two-hit games. Madren drove in two and had a homer, while Shelnut continued to swing the bat well to add two more home runs and four RBI to his resume. The University of Florida commit now has four home runs in his last four outings.

Receiving votes Santa Fe (15-13, 3-4 MFC) will have to wait to conclude their series with the Vikings, which had the opening game postponed to be played on April 1.
