GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Slugger Gabriel Esquivel of Santa Fe College Baseball has made a commitment to attend the University of North Florida to play for the Ospreys.
Esquivel, a native of Doral, Fla. who attended North Broward Prep, just completed his second season with the Saints and was named to the All Mid-Florida Conference First Team.
No. 19 appeared in 48 games as the everyday first baseman and led SF in hits (64), triples (4), HR (19), RBI (58), walks (36), batting average (.390), on-base percentage (.512), and slugging percentage (.866)
Esquivel paced the FCSAA with his 19 long balls, which currently ranks No. 6 in all of the NJCAA. The number also tied the program-record for home runs in a season alongside teammate Tyler Shelnut and Santa Fe Athletics Hall of Famer Matt Armstrong
In his prolific season, Esquivel was the FCSAA leader in slugging percentage who also ranked within the Top-10 in numerous offensive categories. He hit safely in eight of his final nine games, and recorded 19 multi-hit games. Additionally, he had home runs in five consecutive games from Mar. 25 - Apr. 1. He smacked two home runs against Polk State College on Feb. 4, and on the season, played a part in turning 26 double plays defensively.
UNF Baseball is coached by Tim Parenton, and the team currently holds an 18-26 mark overall and 8-13 record in the respected ASUN Conference.
Esquivel is now the fifth baseball commitment to be announced on santafesaints.com and second to UNF, with the list available below. He was also one of eight SF student-athletes to be recognized on Apr. 12 with a "Celebrating Commitments" event at the SF Gymnasium.
