Gainesville, FL – Four players scored in double figures for Santa Fe on Tuesday night as the Saints defeated Polk State (2-5) by a score of 74-63. David-Lee Jones and Sean Dinkins led the attack, scoring 14 each.
SF led by as many as eight in the first half, but saw the lead dwindle to two after six straight points by the Eagles to end the period. Santa Fe had opportunities to stretch their lead throughout the first half, but struggled from the free throw line, going 7-for-15.
"We have to get better from the free throw line," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "Too many points being left on the floor. Sean [Dinkins] was a bright spot for us there."
Dinkins was 8-for-9 from the charity stripe, nailing all four of his attempts in the first half.
The Saints (4-3) quickly turned a close game at the half into a double digit lead just two minutes into the second half. The Eagles showed no quit and cut it to one at 46-45 with 11 minutes to go, but were never able to gain the upper hand.
Santa Fe slowly pushed their lead back out to double digits, going ahead by as many as 12 late in the game. The connected on enough free throws down the stretch to win it by a score of 74-63.
Joining Jones and Dinkins in double figures were Joshua Hawkins with 11 and Nick Grier with 10. Both hit big three pointers down the stretch to stop Polk runs.
"I thought we took much better shots in the second half," said Mowry. "We were more selective and made the extra pass when we needed to."
The Saints will head out on the road Friday after Thanksgiving to battle Hillsborough Community College at 2:00 PM, and will play at State College of Florida in Bradenton on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
