Saints Cruise to 95-61 Win in Season Opener
It took until the 10-minute mark of the first half before the Saints got settled in, but once they did they rolled on to a 95-61 win over Red Devils Academy Thursday evening at the SF gymnasium. Sophomore guard Brady Fernandes led the Saints with 19 points while John Mason added 11 and Miles Coleman 10. Mason, a transfer from Georgia Southwestern University, also grabbed 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. "This gave us an opportunity to play a lot of guys," said Head Coach Chris Mowry. "They get a chance to see what they can do in different situations with different combinations on the floor."
The Saints outscored the Red Devils 13-4 over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 45-33 lead into the break. "We committed too many turnovers, so that is something we have to clean up," said Mowry. A free throw by Mason with 15:30 to go in the game pushed the lead to 20 and the Saints never looked back. Their largest lead reached 37 in the closing minute.
"We were able to get some transition baskets in the second half and stretch the lead out. We ran the floor well, but we have to shoot the ball a little bit better," said Mowry.
The Saints outscored the Red Devils 18-3 at the free throw line and our rebounded them 46-25.
The Saints (1-0) will hit the road for their next four games including a trip to Fort Pierce on Saturday to take on Indian River State College. Their next home game will be on Saturday Nov. 17 when they host ASA for a 2:00 pm game.
