Guard Play Powers Saints Past FSC-J, 67-44
Ivan Smith scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the first half to help the Saints overcome a slow start and earn a 67-44 win of Florida State College @ Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.
In just his second game back after missing the first two months of the season with a foot injury, Smith a 6-foot sophomore out of Oviedo High School, nailed four 3-pointers in the first half as the Saints built a comfortable lead.
"We got off to a slow start," said SF Head Coach Chris Mowry. "Ivan and Brady (Fernandes) got us going when they started knocking down their shots."
Fernandes, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard out of Osceola High School, scored 10 in the first half and finished with 14. Seven-foot center Admir Besovic also hit double figures for the Saints with 12 points.
"It's never easy to win on the road," said Mowry." "I felt we had a good defensive effort all game. Everyone played, and everyone contributed. I'm happy for our players."
The Saints win in their Mid-Florida Conference opener improves their record to 11-6 overall and 1-0 MFC.
SF will host Daytona State at the SF gym Wednesday evening immediately following the SF/DSC women's game. Tip off is expected to be approximately 8 pm.
