Saints Take One from Impact Academy
The Saints men's basketball snapped their four-game skid with a much-needed win against Impact Academy 77-66 at home Tuesday, December 17.
In the first half, the Saints were outscored on the hustle of Impact combined with missed Saints shots. This led to the Saints ending the first half down 13 points.
The second half saw a more focused Saints team and their shots began to fall favorably.
Chipping away at Impact Academy's lead eventually saw the Saints get within two points of their opponent at the 14 minute-mark. Impact responded with points of their own to widen the margin to a 14-point lead in just two and a half minutes.
"After a terrible first half, I thought we played with a high level of intensity in the second," stated Saints head coach Chris Mowry.
He continued, "Credit Impact Academy with being ready to play right from the start, which we were not."
The Saints regrouped to once again challenge Impact, tying the score 51-51 with eight and a half minutes left in regulation.
With a three-point shot by Josiah Tynes at 8:19, the Saints never looked back continued their offensive push until the buzzer sounded.
Mowry added, "Our press really created a lot of turnovers and easy baskets for us in the second half.
Leading the charge in the Saints victory was Yaw Obeng-Mensah (17 points), Tynes (12 points) and Ryan Leonard (11 points).
"Yaw did a great job deflecting passes that led to several layups, while Ryan and Josiah were able to knock down some 'threes' against their zone to help open up things inside," said Mowry.
The Saints (7-8, 0-0 MFC) open the second half of their season with Mid-Florida Conference play against College of Central Florida at home Saturday, January 4. Tip-off will be at 4 p.m. after the Saints women's basketball game (also against College of Central Florida) at 2 p.m.
