Men's Basketball Runs Past Florida Gateway in Season Opener, 92-55
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe College men's basketball's offense was firing on all cylinders in the 2021 season opener, resulting in a 92-55 rout of visiting Florida Gateway College.
It took a few minutes for the Saints to hit their stride, and they took their first lead of the game, 10-9 in the early going.
The score would remain tight until the clock went under seven minutes remaining in the opening half, with Santa Fe holding a 30-26 lead.
A three-pointer in the left corner from Leonardo Da Campo in transition, however, started what would become a dominant 23-4 run for the Saints over the final six minutes of the half.
The run was highlighted by a thunderous dunk from DJ Henderson to go along with a foul, and seven consecutive points from Aleksa Medic to send SF into the break leading comfortably, 53-30.
Out of the break, the run was extended with seven more unanswered points from the Saints, as the hosts doubled up Florida Gateway, 60-30, on a Yaw Obeng-Mensah dunk.
The outcome was never in doubt from that point forward, as Santa Fe went on to cruise to the 92-55 victory over the Timberwolves.
Santa Fe displayed a balanced offensive attack in the night's performance, with five different players reaching double-figure scoring. The Saints also sunk 11 attempts from beyond the arc.
Bradley Douglas led the way in points, finishing with 15 to go along with two three-pointers. Japhet "Jay" Medor added 12 points and orchestrated the offense from the point guard position, while Medic, Da Campo, and Hasan Abdul-Hakim contributed ten points apiece.
A Moment with Mowry
Head Coach Chris Mowry: "I was really happy for our players tonight. It has been a long wait to get to this point and to be able to compete with another team. FGC really gave us a tough time the first 15 minutes of the game. I thought our depth helped us wear them down late in the half and go on a nice run."
"Our defense really tightened up the last 25 minutes of the game, which allowed us to get out in transition for some easy points. Offensively, we played unselfishly and moved the ball well for the most part. Everyone played and ten of 11 players scored. We have a quick turnaround, going up against a very talented Palm Beach State College tomorrow. It's great to be playing!"
