Men's Basketball Prevails in First Road Test, 74-60 over Florida Gateway
LAKE CITY, Fla. - Santa Fe College men's basketball headed away from home for the first time in the 2021 season, and won for a second time over Florida Gateway, 74-60.
The matchup was much more competitive this time around, after Santa Fe beat the Timberwolves by a 92-55 margin on Friday, Feb. 22 in Gainesville.
Despite leading for the majority of the opening half, the Saints faced a 36-34 halftime deficit.
Santa Fe was able to turn up the defensive intensity in the second half, however, outscoring Florida Gateway 40-24 over the final 20 minutes of play.
For the third-straight game to begin the season, guard Bradley Douglas led SF in the scoring column, finishing with 22 points. Japhet "Jay" Medor had 17 points with three triples, while Yaw Obeng-Mensah was a force to be reckoned with inside and outside, contributing 16 points with two triples of his own.
A Moment with Mowry
"It was a gritty win for us!" said Head Coach Chris Mowry. "Florida Gateway was really ready to play tonight, after struggling at our place last week. As a team, we struggled to make shots of any kind. We were too rushed on too many possessions. Our defense in the second half bailed us out, limiting FGC to 24 points! I'm happy with our effort and energy. This was a great lesson for us in learning how tough it can be to win on the road. We have a big challenge Saturday when we travel to play Chipola. They may be the best team in Florida, and are traditionally a Top-10 national power!"
