Men's Basketball Suffers First Setback of Season, 80-56 at Chipola
MARIANNA, Fla. - Santa Fe men's basketball fell into a first half hole at Chipola College, and never were able to recover in the Saints' first loss of 2021, 80-56.
Chipola hit 17-of-34 attempts from the field and went 8-of-14 from beyond the arc in the opening half, while Santa Fe on the other hand struggled from the floor by shooting 9-of-29.
By the halftime whistle, the Indians had established a 46-23 lead on their home floor.
Santa Fe's offense started to find more success in the second half, and the Saints were able to trim their deficit to as low as 11 points with some efficiency from the floor and about 12 minutes remaining.
Chipola regrouped, however, and stemmed the momentum to keep the Saints from drawing any closer. Santa Fe was also hampered by poor free-throw shooting down the stretch, and despite hitting 14-of-24 from the field in the second half, the Saints converted on just 2-of-14 from the stripe.
The Indians had a substancial advantage on the glass in the matchup, grabbing 43 rebounds to Santa Fe's 27.
Japhet "Jay" Medor led the Saints with 11 points to go along with six assists and four steals. Yaw Obeng-Mensah had nine points and seven rebounds, Leonardo da Campo chipped in with nine points, and Bradley Douglas contributed seven points, six rebounds, and five assists. Aleksa Medic hit three of the Saint's eight three-pointers as well in the defeat.
A Moment with Mowry
"It was a tough game for us today against a talented Chipola squad," said Head Coach Chris Mowry. "They did a good job pressing us full court, and were very active in their matchup zone. We started off poorly on D, and let our offensive struggles effect our defense the rest of the half as Chipola went ahead 46-23."
"We really battled with them the entire second half, but really hurt ourselves with the poor free-throw shooting. We will rest tomorrow and get back after it in practice Monday in preparations for the conference opener at home vs. HCC."
