Men's Basketball Gets Past Daytona State College, 86-77
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe men's basketball won their second-straight game on Wednesday evening, playing a solid game on both ends against visiting Daytona State to get past the Falcons, 86-77.
First Half – SF 38, DSC 35
The game was tied at 8-8 in the early going, when the Saints began a run of nine straight points to lead 17-8.
The Falcons countered with a 9-0 run of their own, and the score was knotted up once again nearing the midway point of the first half.
Santa Fe started to gain some steam, however, and went on a 19-3 run to lead 38-24. The final basket during that stretch of play was an emphatic slam from Yaw Obeng-Mensah, who drove from the top of the key and rose up over the defender for the tomahawk dunk (pictured).
The next 11 points of the half, however, went to Daytona State. The Falcons trimmed their halftime deficit to just three, 38-35, with three triples and a basket.
Second Half – SF 86, DSC 77
The Saints' lead was trimmed to one, 40-39, but SF kept Daytona State from regaining the lead in convincing fashion.
The Saints took control of the game with an 18-5 stretch of play, capped off by three-pointers from Leonardo Da Campo and Hasan Abdul-Hakim that brought the score to 58-44 about midway through the half.
Daytona State was forced to try and extend the game in the remaining minutes, but never got any closer than seven points. Santa Fe did well to take care of the ball and hit enough free-throws down the stretch, earning the 86-77 victory.
Key Statistics
The Saints made a season-high 23 free-throws in the win.
Five players finished with double-figure point totals. Douglas led the way with 30 points, canning 17-of-21 from the free-throw line. It was the second time in the last three games that Douglas has eclipsed the 30-point mark, as the guard has been tough for opposing defenses to contain.
Jay Medor had 15 points, Da Campo had 12, while Obeng-Mensah and Hasan Abdul-Hakim added ten apiece, respectively, in the well-balanced outing from the Saints.
A Moment with Mowry
"It was a great win tonight over a very talented Daytona State team!" said Head Coach Chris Mowry.
"We had a slow start offensively tonight, but found a good rhythm in the last ten minutes of the half to go up 38-24. Daytona did a nice job cutting our lead from 12 to three, knocking down three straight to end the half. Our guys came out playing well on both ends in the second half and we were able to build a double-digit lead once again. Brad and Jay did a good job creating for everyone, and Brad was great at the free-throw line down the stretch. Now we get ready for St. Petersburg on Saturday."
