Saints Keep It Rolling as They Improve To 4-0
The Saints were led by their bench as Connor Morris hit 5 threes and Joshua Watkins hit 3 threes.
Gainesville, FL- For the second day in a row, the Saints showed improvement in their ability to produce offensive from their defense. The Saints took a strong defensive stand early on in the first half, leading to a series of easy transition buckets. Macius Trowe scored the first 5 points of the game, including being 3 -3 from the free-throw line. Unlike yesterday against their opponent Gordon State, the Saints were able to establish a strong inside presence scoring at a high percentage around the basket in the first half. The Andrew State Fighting Tigers fought hard to stay in the game with strong guard play from Isaiah Lloyd and Trey Crawford. However, the Saints proved to be too strong, finishing the first half with a score of 48-29.
In the second half, the Saints continued to push the tempo, maintaining their lead. The bench came up big for the Saints, lead by two of their 6'5 combo guards Connor Morris and Joshua Watkins. They both came off the bench shooting phenomenally from behind the three point line, with Morris leading the way with 5 three pointers and Watkins who added another trio of three point shots. The Fighting Tigers continued to fight back, hitting a few three pointers of their own. They also managed to continue to get to the free-throw line often, shooting a total of 17 free- throws, but only able to capitalize on roughly 50% of their attempts. Again, sophomore Chris Heard checked into the game during the second half and managed to electrify the crowd with another big block and alley-oop slam. EJ Rolle wrapped up the Saints scoring by going 2-2 from the free throw line.
The Saints improve to 4-0 as they prepare to take on another non-conference opponent, Florida Gateway College at home.
Comments from Coach Mowry
"We did a good job, especially on defense in the first half. This allowed us some easy baskets in transition. Our big guys did a nice job scoring inside as well. In the second half, we certainly didn't play as well as we should've. It was way too ragged. However we did do a good job off the bench. We will work hard to continue to get better.."- Coach
