Saints Suffer First Loss Against Florida Gateway College
Saints unable to sustain lead down the stretch after struggling from the free throw line.
Gainesville, FL- After a hot start to the season, the Saints lost a tightly contested match to the Florida Gateway College Timberwolves. The Saints started the season with an undefeated record of 4-0 looking to continue the streak tonight. Still not at full strength, the Saints seemed confident as they entered this contest. Led by Macius Trowe with 15 points and three other starters who scored in double figures (Jonathan Renois, Kevin Pazmino, and Ashton Lovette), the Saints fought hard in the first half, trailing by a score of 36-35. The Timberwolves were lead by their 6'8 Freshman F/C Axel Holmquist in the first half who scored 8 points and pulled down timely rebounds.
In the second half, sophomore guard Antewan Webber picked up the pace after a slow first half by scoring 20 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. He finished with 27 points in the game. A key moment in the game came from Saints guard Kevin Pazmino, who hit a timely 3 pointer to give the Saints a 75-74 lead with a 1:52 left. In the final two minutes of the game, Antewan Webber hit back to back threes to give the Timberwolves an 80-75 lead. The Timberwolves shot 78 percent from the free throw line, while the Saints shot a disappointing 58 percent, which proved to be the biggest difference in the game.
The Saints look to rebound at 4pm on Saturday at home against Palm Beach State College.
Comments from Coach Mowry
It was a really good job by Florida Gateway College. They put pressure on us defensively and forced turnovers as well as attacked the basket. Their team hit some timely 3 pointers down the stretch and were difficult to guard. We will watch film and practice and will get better from this. Our next opponent (Palm Beach State College) plays a similar style of basketball and present the same issues defensively, so we will need to be prepared to play another difficult opponent.
