Softball Opens 2021 with 7-3 Defeat to Florida Southwestern
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Santa Fe softball was at Eddie C. Moore Park in Clearwater, Fla., participating in the JUCO Kickoff Classic and Showcase to open up the 2021 season. In the day's first of three games, the Saints fell by a 7-3 score to NJCAA No. 1 Florida Southwestern State College.
The Saints jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the second inning. After Story Giebeig reached on an error to leadoff, Shaela Bybee had a bunt single and Cris'Deona Beasley had one of her, bringing around both Geibeig and Bybee.
The Bucs responded with two runs in their next at-bats off Santa Fe starter Taylor Barrett, then tacked on four runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to seize a 7-2 lead.
Santa Fe brought one more run home on a sacrifice fly from Madison Dixon in the fifth, plating Grace Prom who had reached on a walk and advanced to third after a Neely Peterson double.
That tally would be the Saint's final score in the matchup with the nation's top-team, however, as the Bucs were able to hold off the efforts of Santa Fe to make a comeback.
Offensively, Santa Fe finished with five hits, led by Cris'Deona Beasley's 2-of-3 performance with two RBI.
In the circle, Barrett took the loss in three innings pitched, giving way to Beasley who tossed the final three frames, allowing two hits and one run.
