Softball Gets Past St. Johns River with Dominant Pitching Performances
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe Softball held visiting St. Johns River State College to just three hits in a doubleheader on Thursday, as the Saints swept the Vikings for the second time this season, 6-1 and 2-1.
Game 1 - SF 6, SJR 1
A scoreless game was broken open in the third inning with five runs from the Saints.
After singles from Jayelyn Carter and Grace Prom, Riley Schnyder cleared the bases with a triple. Neely Peterson walked, and Morgan Lebeda proceeded to hit a two-out, three run bomb to left field.
The Saints' sixth run came in the fourth on an RBI single from Prom, and although St. Johns River had a solo home run in the sixth inning, Saints' starter Taylor Barrett and the defense limited the Vikings offense the rest of the way to pick up the season's 25th win.
Key Statistics
Prom finished with three of the team's nine hits from the leadoff spot, and had an RBI and run scored. Lebeda went 2-of-3 with the three-run home run, her third of the season. Schnyder triple scored two before she came around to score as well.
Barrett went the distance from the circle to earn her 12th win of the season. She held the Vikings to just two hits, one earned run, and six walks while striking out 12 batters.
Game 2 - SF 2, SJR 1
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel, much like the first time these two teams had met in Palatka, Fla.
St. Johns River had their one and only hit of the contest off Cris'Deona Beasley in the third inning, and the Vikings took a 1-0 lead after a baserunner touched home after a passed ball.
Santa Fe tied it at 1-1 in the fifth frame with a solo home run from Prom. After two outs had been recorded, the Saints then found a way to load the bases. After a pitching change, Lebeda came through in the clutch with an RBI single to score Peterson and hand the Saints a 2-1 lead.
The lead was all Beasley and the defense would need, as the Saints ended the sixth and the seventh inning in the field with well-turned 5-4-3 double plays.
Key Statistics
Beasley's win was her 11th of the season, and she was dominant in a one-hitter. St. Johns River's run was unearned, and she finished with four walks and eight strikeouts.
Prom was 2-of-2 with the solo home run, while Lebeda accounted for the other RBI with her single to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Madison Dixon, Brianna Arsenault, and Ashlyn Rogers each also had a hit apiece.
Fico's Focus
"Our pitching today was lights out! To only give up three hits in 14 innings is a 180 from earlier in the week. I'm proud of the way both pitchers bounced back! Riley Schnyder got us going with a big hit in the first game to score the opening two runs. Grace Prom is on a tear offensively. She continues to get the timely hit when needed and fuel our offense."
