Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (2-2) forced 29 turnovers and tallied 17 steals, including six by sophomore guard Sonya Franklin, to lead SF to a convincing 60-46 victory over St. Petersburg College (1-2) on Tuesday night in Gainesville.
"I was very proud of our defensive effort tonight," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. "We were standing in taking charges, showed a lot of energy on and off the ball to garner a bunch of deflections and steals. Hopefully we can build on this effort moving forward."
The Saints used their defense to stay in the game early when their offense was still finding its way. They trailed 13-11 after the first quarter, but rallied in the second, holding the Titans to just nine points to take a 28-22 lead into the break. The SF defense continued to shine in the second half, keeping SPC in check to the tune of 12 points in each of the last two quarters.
The Saints received balanced scoring with eight players getting on the board. Franklin led the way with 13, Ari Emanuel-Wright had 11, and Rayven Wade scored nine points to go with a team high 11 rebounds. Wade has double digit rebounds in each of the Saints first four games.
Santa Fe will try and continue their winning ways when they take to the road in Ocala for the College of Central Florida Classic on November 13 and 14. On Friday they battle IMG Academy at 2:00 PM, and take on Miami Dade on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
