Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints tightened their grip on second place in the Mid-Florida Conference on Wednesday evening, and more importantly a spot in the FCSAA Tournament, with a 70-59 win over rivals the College of Central Florida. Santa Fe is now 2-0 against CF this season.
The Patriots (15-9, 3-4 MFC) started the game on a roll, leading 12-4 five minutes in. SF (13-11, 5-3 MFC) turned the tide the rest of the quarter, and grabbed a 17-15 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter was back and forth with three lead changes, and the half ended the way it started, tied up at 33-33.
In the third, the Saints took control and outscored the Patriots by nine to take a 54-45 lead into the final quarter. CF's Kiarah Mallory kept them in it with three three pointers to cut the lead down to two on two occasions. That's as close as it would get, as Santa Fe came up with some big shots in the final minutes, and made their free throws to pull away by double digits.
Sonya Franklin finished just shy of a triple double, scoring 19 points to go with 10 rebounds and seven assists, Brianca Roberts had 14 points, Corey Staples 12 points, and Rayven Wade had 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The Saints will take a week off before returning to game action on February 10 in Gainesville against Hillsborough CC at 6:00 PM.
