Ocala, FL – The Santa Fe Saints were within one point with 30 seconds to go against one of the top teams in the nation on Thursday afternoon at the FCSAA Tournament, but came up just short, falling 79-75 to end their season.
The Saints played one of their best games of the season, attacking the basket early and often to build as much as a 10 point lead in the first half. NJCAA #18/FCSAA #4 Florida SouthWestern State College closed the gap at the end of the first quarter and lead 42-40 at the halftime break.
The Buccaneers looked like they may pull away in the third quarter, but Janasia Law and the Saints had other ideas, fighting all the way back to make it a four point game going into the final 10 minutes. Law used her dribbling ability to slash to the hoop and draw contact, making all six of her free throw attempts.
Santa Fe kept things close and got it down to 76-75 with just 32 second remaining. Two made free throws by the Bucs pushed the lead to three with under 20 seconds. SF was able to get an open look at a three pointer, just missing the chance to tie the game. FSW corralled the rebound and made one of two free throws with six seconds left to clinch the game.
Law finished with a game high 20 points, Bri Richardson had 14, Stephanie Jackson scored 12, and Ivana Boyd had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Saints finish the season 17-13 and will return eight players next season, seeing just three sophomores from a very young team move on to the next level.
