Saints Win Third Straight, 77-67
The Santa Fe Saints turned up the tempo in the second half on the way to their 77-67 win over Pensacola State College in the SF gym Sunday afternoon.
The Saints (4-3) trailed 18-12 at the end of the first quarter but a pair of free throws by Stephanie Jackson and a basket by Janasia Law in the closing minute of the second quarter put the Saints up 35-31 at the half.
"We were 13 of 13 from the free throw line in the first half," said Head Coach Chanda Stebbins. "That as much as anything put us in a position to make a run in the second half."
The Pirates (4-1) battled back to take a 49-46 lead on a 3-pointer by Anita Payne with four minutes to go in the third period, but the Saints outscored the Pirates 10-1 the rest of the stanza and took a 56-50 lead into the fourth period.
Jackson scored 11 of her game high 31 points in the fourth quarter and back-to-back 3-pointers by Law and Jackson pushed the Saints lead to 15 at 68-53 at around the seven-minute mark.
"It was nice to see our three guards really get it going," said Stebbins. "I look forward to seeing what the future brings."
Jackson's 31 led all scorers while Law poured in 25 and Chardell Jones scored 10 for the Saints. Brandi Washington led PSC with 16 points.
"Very proud of this win over a top ten team in the state," said Stebbins. "I'm impressed with our ability to out rebound a much bigger Pensacola team."
The Saints will travel to Tallahassee on Tuesday to take on the defending national champion TCC Eagles with the tip off scheduled for 5:30 pm.
