Saints Shoot Down Broward, 83-73
The Santa Fe Saints returned to action after a 12-day break for the holidays and showed signs of a well-rested and prepared team in their 83-73 win over Broward College at the Florida Southwestern Classic held in Fort Myers Friday and Saturday.
"I'm really proud of our defensive effort in the second half, said SF Head Coach Chanda Stebbins. "Especially happy with our production from the free-throw line."
The Saints (9-5) trail by a point at 60-59 entering the final period, but knocked down nine of ten foul shots and held the Seahawks to just 13 points to seal the win. Forced us to use four and sometimes five guards on the floor at the same time, Stebbins said the key was how the players adjusted to playing a smaller lineup.
"I am pleased with our players' individual and collective ability to adjust your playing small, said Stebbins. We didn't have an answer for Pleskevich but we had some people play hard on her."
Margarita Pleskevich, a 5 foot 9 sophomore point guard out of Moscow Russia, led all scorers with 35 points while sophomore Stephanie Jackson led SF with 20.
SF's Airneisha Gamble scored 17 points to go with four assists and four steals while Janasia Law scored 11 and had six rebounds and five assists.
BC (10-5) came into the game ranked 7th in the state while the Saints checked in ranked 9th. The Saints will face Florida Southwestern State College on Saturday in a game scheduled to tip off at 3:00 pm.
