Saints Fall to NJCAA #17 FSW 83-72
The Buccaneers of Florida Southwestern State College displayed a powerful inside game in their 83-72 win over the Santa Fe Saints Saturday afternoon in Ft. Myers.
A pair of freshman, 6-foot-2 Shondell Vickers and 6-foot-1 Simone Lett, controlled the paint with Vickers scoring 28 points to go with 13 rebounds and Lett chipping in 25 points and five rebounds.
"Their post play really set them apart for us," said Saints Head Coach Chanda Stebbins. "They played very well high/low and we didn't have an answer for that."
The Bucs (14-2) never trailed, but the Saints kept it close over the first three quarters, trailing by a basket after the first quarter and by five (39-34) at the half. FSW opened up their largest lead of 14 points during the third quarter but the Saints rally back to keep the deficit at five (62-57) going into the final period.
"Our guards did a great job limiting FSW looks but we didn't have an answer for their interior depth," said Stebbins. "We also will need to limit our turnovers, we gave up too many points off bad passes."
Saints sophomore Airneisha Gamble led all scorers with 29 points which included five 3-pointers and Stephanie Jackson and Janasia Law each scored 16.
SF (9-6) will travel to Jacksonville to begin Mid-Florida conference play when they faced the Blue Wave of Florida State College - Jacksonville next Saturday at 2 pm.
