Saints Come Up Short in 92-88 Loss to Daytona
It was a well-played basketball game with each team flexing their muscles when they had to, but in the end Daytona State College had a little more inside game and pulled out a 92-88 win over the Santa Fe Saints Wednesday night. After a slow start and double-digit deficit, the Saints battled back to tie the game at 42-42 at the halftime. Camille Pringle scored three points in the closing minutes of the half and Destiny Williams hit a pair of free throws to tie the score.
"Our players really fought back hard and did some good things but in this league you have to play for four quarters," said SF Head Coach Chanda Stebbins.
Janasia Law scored seven of her game high 20 points in the third quarter to keep it close, but the Falcons outscored the Saints 22-18 in the period and took a 64-58 lead into the final quarter.
"We have to be more willing to be physical with our bodies and not complain every time we get a floor burn or get bumped," said Stebbins.
Law hit two of her four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Chardell Jones scored six, but 6-foot-4 freshman Maddie Batista scored eight of her 16 points for the Falcons as they held on for the win. Law led the Saints with 20 points while Airneisha Gamble scored 18, Stephanie Jackson 17 and Jones 10.
"We are getting better but I would have liked to have had a win that we could get better through," said Stebbins. "This will make us better."
The Saints (10-7, 1-1 MFC) will take on DME Academy Saturday in Daytona and will not play again at home until January 23.
