Saints Soar Past HCC Eagles, 90-76
The Saints women's basketball team emerged victorious in their Tuesday, December 3rd game at home against the Hillsborough Community College Eagles with a final score of 90-76.
The first half of the game saw both teams jockeying back and forth on the scoreboard for the lead with three tied scores and seven lead changes. There was no more than a six-point margin in the competitive first half, ending with a 34-32 score in favor of the Saints.
Immediately into the second half of play the Hawks made a two-point basket to even the score and both teams once again battled for control throughout the third quarter. With just under three minutes in the third, the Saints went on a 10-2 run and created distance for the first double-digit lead of the entire game.
The Saints never looked back and continued to pile on the points in the final quarter, with many Saints players contributing along the way.
Saints head coach Chanda Stebbins said, "Five people in double-figures really defines us and I hope that can continue. I liked the confidence with which Yairé (Rodriguez) shot the ball, and it was complimented by her six assists. She did a great job today of playing a complete game." Stebbins continued, "I am happy that Cam (Pringle) and Danasia (Bogle) came into the game ready to play and contribute, I am proud of their efforts and production."
As each game serves as a learning experience on ways to improve, Stebbins added, "I was pleased with our effort and energy for most of the game, but when we have those lapses, we need to learn to pick it back up quicker."
Rodriguez lead the Saints with 19 points in addition to her six assists. Bogle added 14 points and Zoé Alexander had 11 point and eight rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scoring was Taniah Bowers with 10 points with six rebounds and Teagan Rothrock also having 10 points.
Improving to 6-5 overall (0-0 MFC), the Saints travel to Panama City, FL for the Florida Colleges Shootout. The team has a 12 p.m. (11 a.m. Central) game against Eastern Florida State College Friday, December 6.
