Saints Split Games at Shootout Weekend
Saints women's basketball split their pair of games at the Florida Colleges Women's Basketball Shootout Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7.
In their first Shootout challenge the Saints played and lost to the Eastern Florida State College Titans, 85-77.
Down by five points after the first quarter, the Saints outscored the Titans in the second quarter and went into halftime with an even 36-36 score.
The third quarter, however, belonged to the Titans as the Saints could not keep up offensively and put distance between the two teams.
Despite turning things around in the final quarter and holding their opponents to 12 points, the Saints failed catch up before the end of regulation.
"We played really hard," stated Saints head coach Chanda Stebbins. "The third quarter continues to be a problem for us energy-wise."
She continued, "I'm proud of how hard we played to start but that needs to be consistent through four quarters."
Danasia Bogle lead the Saints with 19 points and seven rebounds, followed by Teagan Rothrock's 13 points.
The second game for the Saints ended with a better result in their favor with a win over the Broward College Seahawks, 80-63.
The first half saw the Saints and the Seahawks battle closely for the lead and headed into halftime with only one point separating the two teams.
The third quarter by the Saints showed energy and effort as they outscored Broward for a five-point cushion heading into the final stanza.
Bogle went on an offensive tear and propelled the Saints for a 32-14 fourth quarter off a flurry of scoring, garnering 13 of her 18 points in the process.
"Danasia had a huge fourth quarter. She continues to do a great job scoring when we need it!" Stebbins said.
She also added, "Very proud of our players defense effort. We really challenged them to step up their energy level for four quarters and for the majority of the game I thought we responded."
Stebbins also praised Taniah Bowers' game as she showed up big-time in many ways.
"Taniah really played a lot harder today and it shows in her statistical categories of steals, assists, and rebounds."
Bowers ended the game with nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Leading scorers were Bogle with 18 points and Aleisha Curry, also with 18 points.
The Saints (7-6, 0-0 MFC) return to the court at St. Petersburg College for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday, December 18.
