Saints Run Past Broward, 92-75
The Santa Fe Saints used a strong offensive effort to defeat Broward College 92-75 Sunday afternoon in Ft. Myers after losing to NJCAA #13 Florida SouthWestern State College 72-67 Saturday evening.
Saturday, the Saints survived a flurry of 3-pointers by the Buccaneers in the opening period when FSW hit eight from beyond the Arc and held a 29-18 lead after the first stanza. The Saints stayed with their host and took a 59-58 lead with seven minutes to play until the Buccaneers defense dug in to finish off their win.
"I am proud of how hard our players played," said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins. " We couldn't overcome all the threes they made in the first quarter. Great effort by our players and I liked how they played to the end"
On Sunday, the Saints offense took control early as they jumped out to 25-11 lead after the first period. After holding a 42-37 lead at the half, the Saints put the game away outscoring the Broward College Seahawks 30-17 in the third period and maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way for the 92-75 victory.
"I thought we played hard in spurts and did a good job getting them out of their comfort zone," said Stebbins "It was nice to see freshmen Lauren and Aleisha set the tone early for us. I thought our defensive effort by Taniah and Rosi also really established a great tempo early."
Lauren Carmona led the Saints with 19 points while fellow freshmen Aleisha Curry and Taniah Bowers added 18 and 10 points respectively.
Curry notched back-to-back double-doubles with 17 points and 20 rebounds on Saturday and 18 points and 11 rebounds Sunday in the two-day trip to Ft. Myers.
SF (8-7) returns to action when they host the College of Central Florida in the Mid-Florida Conference schedule opener on Saturday January 4. The tip off is scheduled for 2 pm at the SF gymnasium.
