Balanced Attack Powers Saints Past Patriots
Yaire Rodriguez led five players in double figures as the sophomore transfer from Keiser University scored 18 points to help the Saints win their Mid-Florida Conference opener over the College of Central Florida 76-63 Saturday afternoon in Gainesville.
"It was great to see Yaire shoot with confidence," said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins.
Both teams got off to sluggish starts, but a late rally by the Saints gave them a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. CF (9-8, 0-1 MFC) cut the lead to single digits over the next 10 minutes and the Saints led 37-30 at the half.
SF is second in the state in team rebounding, but CF was winning the battle on the boards through the first half. Chardell Jones got involved in the paint for the Saints to turn the tide in the second half. The sophomore out of Orlando finished with just two points but led both teams with 12 rebounds.
"I'm very proud of our second half rebounding effort," said Stebbins. "We got out rebounded in the first half by 1. I thought Chardell came in and gave us some very valuable and timely rebounds and steals."
Danasia Bogle followed Rodriguez in the scoring column with 13 points while Aleisha Curry and Taniah Bowers each scored 11 and Rosalee Nicholson added 10.
"We need to build on this and get ready for Daytona," said Stebbins.
SF (9-8, 1-0 MFC) will travel to Daytona on Wednesday to take on Daytona State. Their next home game will be on Wednesday Jan.15 when the host St. Petersburg State College.
