Saints Move Into Top Spot with 65-61 Win Over Daytona
Aleisha Curry and Rosalee Nicholson each scored 20 points to lead the Santa Fe Saints to a 65-61 win over Daytona State College that moved them into first place in the Mid-Florida Conference.
SF head coach Chanda Stebbins said that being in first place with four MFC gams to play is nice, but they still have a lot of work to do.
"I guess the best thing about it is that we control our own destiny," said Stebbins. "We are playing solid basketball right now and we're getting contributions for everyone, but we have to continue playing at that level."
The teams played evenly early in the game, but the Falcons outscored the Saints 12-4 over the last six minutes of the second period to take a 32-29 lead into the halftime break.
Curry scored the first four points of the second half, giving the Saints a lead they would not relinquish. The freshman from Lehigh Acres also scored the final four points of the third quarter pushing the Saints lead to 52-45 going into the fourth quarter.
The Falcons cut the Saints lead to four with 1:40 to play, but a minute later Nicholson knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the game from the corner as the shot clock ran out to put the Saints up by seven.
"She is shooting the ball with confidence right now," said Stebbins. "That's why we are not afraid to put the ball in her hands in those situations.
The Saints made three of four free throws in the final 25 seconds to ice the win.
It was the 14th double figure scoring game of the season for Curry and 13th for Nicholson. Curry recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Nicholson had five assist and four steals to go with her 20 points.
"She gets a lot of her energy off her defensive play," Stebbins said of Nicholson. "When your hustling all the time you don't have time to think about your shot."
SF (13-10, 4-1 MFC) will host a non-conference opponent when Elite Sports comes to town on Wednesday Jan. 29 for a 5:30 tip off.
