Saints Women Get 99-85 Win Over CF
Chardell Jones scored a season high 26 points and Aleisha Curry recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 16 rebounds to spark the Santa Fe Saints to a 99-85 win over The College of Central Florida Saturday afternoon at the SF gymnasium.
"I was very impressed with how Chardell responded and gave us great buckets and a solid mindset to attack," said SF head coach Chanda Stebbins. "We are so used to getting steals and lay-ups from our guards, but it was great to see Chardell and Aleisha come up with some big steals and finishes."
The Saints started slowly but still held a 49-44 lead at the half.
"Very proud of how hard our players played today. I thought we made a lot of mistakes and missed a lot of easy lay-ups but credit to our kids for playing hard through that and not letting frustration make them slow down," said Stebbins.
The Saints opened up their lead by outscoring the Patriots 27-15 in the third quarter, but CF rallied to cut the deficit to eight with six minutes to play. Jones got the Saints back on track with a basket and the Saints outscored CF 17-13 the rest of the way.
Rosalee Nicholson chipped in with 13 points and Teagan Rothrock scored 11 as the Saints moved into sole possession of first place in the Mid-Florida Conference with the win.
SF (16-10, 6-1 MFC) edged in front of Daytona State College (5-1 MFC) who had the day off.
"The big test comes Wednesday against Daytona," said Stebbins. "The winner will own the tie breaker and finish first in the conference."
The Saints will travel to Daytona on Wednesday.
