Women’s Basketball Falls at Hillsborough, 90-71
TAMPA, Fla. – Hillsborough Community College connected on 19 three-pointers Saturday to earn a 90-71victory against the Santa Fe women's basketball team at HCC Gymnasium.
It was the second win in as many days for the Hawks (8-5, 4-4 Central Conference) against the Saints (3-10, 2-6).
First Quarter – HCC 31, SF 19
Powered by five three-pointers, Hillsborough led 31-19 after the opening quarter. The Hawks won the opening tip and raced out to a 12-2 lead. They held Santa Fe without a field goal for the game's first 4:19 before sophomore Lauren Carmona knocked down a three-pointer.
HCC pushed its lead out to 10 points, 18-8, at the 4:30 mark of the first period. With the Saints trailing 23-14, sophomore Jasani Buchanan connected on a jumper and freshman Renee Clines drained a three-pointer from the left wing to bring Santa Fe within four, 23-19, at the 1:45 mark. The Hawks scored the final eight points of the quarter.
Second Quarter – HCC 51, SF 39
Sophomore Peris Starks registered the first basket of the second quarter, but Hillsborough point guard Holly Davies answered with five points of her own to give the Hawks what was then their largest lead of the game, 36-21, with 7:36 remaining until halftime.
With Santa Fe down 41-27 at the 5:59 mark of the second period, the Saints used a 10-3 run over the next 4:32 to trim their deficit down to seven, 44-37. HCC scored seven of the final nine points of the half to enter intermission with a 51-39 advantage.
Third Quarter – HCC 78, SF 51
Hillsborough went on a three-point shooting barrage to open the third quarter, knocking down six treys in the first 4:22 of the period to push its lead out to 31 points, 71-40.
Four different Santa Fe players scored, including five points from freshman Kelli Cunningham, in a 10-3 run that brought the Saints to within 24, 74-50, with 2:49 left in the third quarter.
The Hawks finished the third stanza with eight three-pointers and a 78-51 advantage headed into the game's final quarter.
Fourth Quarter – HCC 90, SF 71
Santa Fe scored seven of the first nine points of the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer by freshman Andrea Torres, to cut within 23, 81-58, with 7:59 remaining in the game.
After five straight points by Hillsborough extended its advantage to 86-58, the Saints closed the game on a 13-4 run.
Key Statistics
Clines led Santa Fe with a career-high18 points, including four three-pointers, while Torres added 14, which ties her career high, also with a quartet of threes. Buchanan added nine points.
Both teams relied on success from beyond the arc. HCC finished with 19 three-pointers, while Santa Fe totaled 11 from long range.
