Women’s Basketball Beats FSCJ for Second Time, 64-48
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe Women's Basketball went on the road to face conference foe Florida State College at Jacksonville on Monday evening and led horn to horn in a 64-48 victory, which snapped a seven-game losing streak.
First Quarter – SF 17, FSCJ 11
The Saints jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Blue Wave got on the board midway through the quarter.
Carla Soto came off the bench and was an instant contributor, hitting a trey ball off an inbounds play, making the lead 9-2. That wasn't her last three-pointer of the quarter because minutes later, she would hit another three-pointer off the same inbounds play. The Saints led at the end of one, 17-11.
Second Quarter – SF 34, FSCJ 20
The Blue Wave opened the second quarter with a three, but it did not phase the Saints as they were able to put together another strong quarter, getting a big contribution from Zoé Alexander. Alexander hit several big shots as she seemed to put the team on her shoulders, and SF took a 34-20 lead into the half.
Third Quarter – SF 47, FSCJ 27
The Saints turned on the after burners on offense, while playing stifling defense. The Saints limited the Blue Wave to just seven points in the third quarter and opened up their lead to 20 by the end of the frame.
Taniah Bowers had the hot hand, as she opened the quarter with a tough layup, using the rim to shield the Blue Wave defender. At one point, Bowers got to the free throw line on three consecutive offensive possessions.
Fourth Quarter – SF 64, FSCJ 48
The Saints went into the final quarter with a comfortable lead and withstood a 7-0 run from the Blue Wave before finally putting the game away. Jasani Buchanan and Andrea Torres led the charge in the quarter, where at one point the Saints held their second 20-point lead of the game.
Key Statistics
Three players were able to notch double-digit scoring efforts, led by 19 from Alexander. Buchanan was next with 13, while also grabbing 11 boards giving her a double-double. Torres also dished in 11 points. Lauren Carmona had 10 rebounds. Bowers ended the game with nine points, nine boards, four assists and four steals.
