Home Opener Goes as Planned for Women’s Basketball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe College Women's Basketball had no troubles with Webber International University JV on Friday evening in the season's home opener, and the outcome was never in doubt in an 89-49 victory.
With the win, SF moves to 3-3 on the season. Here's how the game played out inside the SF Gymnasium…
First Quarter – SF 26, WEBBER 15
The Warriors produced the game's first two points, but the Saints countered and quickly took control with seven unanswered points. Kelli Cunningham sunk two quick triples.
The lead reached double-digits for the first time, 16-6, after Cunningham found the bottom of the net from deep once again near the midway point of the quarter, and SF led by 11 after the first ten minutes of play.
Second Quarter – SF 60, WEBBER 27
The first nine points of the frame went to SF, opening up a 35-15 lead.
Leading 40-24 with 4:39 on the clock, the Saints ended the half with a flurry, outscoring the Warriors 20-3.
The Saints went on a 19-0 run during that stretch, turning the Warriors over and converting on the other end to break the game open.
Third Quarter – SF 79, WEBBER 38
The pace started to slow down a bit, but the Saints continued to dominate as they extended their lead to 41 headed into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter – SF 89, WEBBER 49
The Saints were in cruise control the rest of the way, and led by as many as 45, 89-44, after a basket from Malea Brown with 4:25 to play. That proved to be the Saints final bucket in the largest victory of the season.
Key Statistics
Santa Fe won the turnover margin, forcing 30 turnovers with 16 miscues of their own.
In the rebounding category, SF was dominant, 68-47. 32 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Brown and Cunningham were both prolific offensively, finishing with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Both totals were career-highs for the two goards.
Cunningham did most of her damage from behind the arc, going 6-of-12 from three, while Brown had her first career double-double with 10 rebounds.
Olivia Smith (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Taniah Bowers (11 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists) were also key contributors in the comfortable victory.
Off the bench, Adout Ring had her best game of her young Saints' career, notching six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
